The major differences between a rolled and ground ballscrew are the manufacturing process, the lead error definition and geometrical tolerances. Hiwin rolled ballscrews are made through a rolling process of the screw spindle instead of a grinding process. Rolled ballscrews provide smooth movement and low friction which can be supplied quickly from stock, at a lower production cost.

Precision ground ballscrews pick up where rolled grades stop: C0 to C5 accuracy when the lead-error budget is tighter than C6 allows. View Precision Ground Ballscrews →

  • Linear actuators
  • Gate valves and power steering
  • All-electric injection molding machines

Nut configurations

The first letter is the nut body (F flange, R round, S square; a D or Q prefix marks double- and quad-start high-lead nuts), S is a single nut, and the last letter the circulation: Z Super Z, C Super S, T Super T, V and W return tubes above and within the nut diameter, B bonded tube, H end cap, I internal caps. DIN and V-thread types ship from stock.

Accuracy grades

Rolled grades are set by accumulated lead error over any 300 mm of travel (Table 7.1); precision rolled screws reach C6.

  • C6 23 µm per 300 mm — General industrial robots, single-purpose machines
  • C7 50 µm per 300 mm — Linear actuators, transport axes
  • C8 100 µm per 300 mm — Woodworking machines, gate valves
  • C10 210 µm per 300 mm — Transport and packaging duty

Preload methods

Rolled ballscrews take the same preload methods as precision ground screws; best preload stays below 5% of dynamic load C. Preload type codes: P compression · O offset.

  • — Double nut + spacer (nut type D) — Tension preload, the precision standard
  • O Offset-pitch single nut — Compact, high stiffness; not for heavy-duty preload
  • — Oversized-ball single nut — Light preload, four-point ball contact

Thread direction

Right-hand thread is standard; Table 7.3 marks the diameter and lead pairs also rolled left-hand.

  • R Right-hand — Standard on every listed size
  • L Left-hand — Combinations marked in Table 7.3; others on request
